How Much Would You Save?

Most people figure that they can save a few dollars by taking public transportation instead of driving in their car.  But it can be hard to convince yourself to try something new when the benefit doesn't seem real.  Exactly how much will you save?  Enough for a gallon of milk?  A tank or two of gas?  A month of your mortgage or rent payment?

The American Public Transit Association has provided a useful calculator so you can plug in read numbers and see the real answer--exactly how much would you save if you switched to public transportation for your ride to work?

If you're traveling off-peak (between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. or after 6 p.m.) to and from work, your round trip cost is only $1.00--that's $0.50 each way!  Purchase a monthly pass for $45 and enjoy an average daily commute price of $2.00.  Otherwise, you still enjoy the low price of a $3.00 round trip in cash fare.

If you currently live in Groton, commute into Ithaca in your medium-sized car that gets 25 miles to the gallon, and purchase a monthly parking permit in a downtown garage, you would save nearly $1,800 per year, just by purchasing a monthly TCAT pass and letting us take you to work!
