TCAT Sponsors 1st Annual DeWitt Middle School Great Race

On Thursday, April 24, 2008 students from the DeWitt Middle School will compete in the first Annual DeWitt Middle School Great Race, sponsored by Tompkins Consolidated Area Transit, Inc. (TCAT).
On Thursday morning, students will receive instructions from TCAT representatives on how to use TCAT buses, maps and schedules. Six teams of five students and one adult will then plan out the best way to visit various pre-determined local business (checkpoints) using regular TCAT bus routes. The teams must collect tokens from each checkpoint they visit and then return to the school. The team returning to the DeWitt Middle School with the most tokens wins the race.
Each member of the winning team will receive a free TCAT Summer Fun Youth Pass. The TCAT Summer Fun Youth Pass is a colored lanyard that entitles the bearer to unlimited rides on all TCAT buses from the end of June to the beginning of September.
“This a great opportunity for young students to get first hand experience in using TCAT’s bus system,” said James Bratton Communications and Marketing Manager for TCAT, Inc. “Hopefully this will help the students become less reliant on family providing transportation to their summer activities,” he continued.
DeWitt Middle School Principal Ron Acerra said, “Teaching kids about the use of TCAT really makes sense from so many angles. To begin with, use of TCAT can level the playing field from kids throughout the district, many of whom do not have other regular transportation. We felt that if we teach the kids how to use the local public transportation system, maybe their parents will begin to use it as well, which is a very green idea. This is a totally cool way to do so.”
The members of each team must stay together throughout the race. The adult on each team is a non-participant. They will observe the students to make sure the rules are followed, and provide regular updates to the students back at the school. TCAT Summer Fun Youth Passes are on sale from certain TCAT retail outlets, online at www.tcatbus.com or directly from TCAT at 737 Willow Ave, Ithaca, NY 14424. They cost $50 each and can be used on any TCAT bus from the end of June to the beginning of September 2008.
